Hacking is usually the first step of a renovation or reinstatement, and it is also the messiest. Whether you are redoing a bathroom in an HDB flat, opening up a condo kitchen or clearing an office for handover, a little planning prevents damage, delays and complaints. Here is what to know before any hacking starts.

What Is Hacking?

Hacking means breaking up and removing hard finishes and structures: tiles, screed, brick walls, counters and built-in carpentry. It is followed by debris disposal, which is why we offer hacking and disposal as one service.

What Can and Cannot Be Hacked

Structural Walls Are Off-Limits

Structural walls, columns and beams hold the building up and must not be hacked. In HDB flats, some works also need approval before they can start. A good contractor checks which walls are non-structural before quoting.

Condo Rules Come from the MCST

Condominiums have their own renovation rules set by the management corporation (MCST), including permitted working hours, deposits and protection requirements for lifts and common areas.

Offices Follow Building Management

Office towers often restrict noisy work to after hours. That is why office hacking is often combined with night reinstatement works.

Common Types of Hacking Works

  • Floor tile hacking to replace old, cracked or hollow tiles

  • Bathroom and kitchen hacking for a full wet-area refresh

  • Non-structural wall hacking to open up a layout

  • Built-in carpentry removal, often paired with our disposal and dismantling service

How to Prepare for Hacking Works

1. Clear the Area

Move valuables and furniture out of the work area, or ask us to dismantle and remove them.

2. Inform Your Neighbours

A short note to neighbours goes a long way. Hacking is noisy, and knowing the schedule helps.

3. Protect What Is Staying

Floors, doors, lifts and corridors should be covered before work begins. We set this protection up as part of every job.

4. Plan the Disposal

Hacking creates a lot of heavy debris. Make sure your quote includes bagging, haulage and disposal.

Tip: Hidden pipes and wiring often run under tiles and inside walls. If you plan to change your electrical or plumbing layout, do it while the walls and floors are open.
